Why use Plucker?

Many people have asked what Plucker is used for, so I'll try to do my best to answer from my own perspective what it's useful for to me (others may use it differently).

When Plucker was created by Mark Lillywhite a few years ago, he wanted to use it to view simple web pages offline. Since that time, many people have contributed to it's development and matured it to the incredible product it is today.

Plucker is now a very capable offline web portal. You can bring down web pages, images, documents, local files, text files, and almost anything that the Palm can understand and view (Plucker does not support binary files, however, such as MP3s). Anything you can view on the web can be viewed with Plucker. It also supports several options with images enabled, disabled, and maximum depth spidering.

There are some features which are on our "Wish List" to implement within Plucker in the very near future. Some of these include:

  • Full mailto support so you can compose and send mail by tapping on the mailto link in a web page
  • Bookmark support
  • Clipboarding of content
  • Adding and modifying the pages dynamically (increasing depth, etc. for your next sync)

Plucker is slowly adding more functionality and more features every single day.

Several platforms are now supported, much moreso than the original product in it's original conception. We now support FreeBSD, Sparc Solaris, Windows (all flavors), Linux (libc5 and glibc2), and very very soon, Macintosh will be fully supported.

We also support Plucker on the fol devices:

  • Palm Professional
  • Palm III, Palm IIIx, Palm IIIxe
  • Palm V, Palm Vx
  • Palm VII
  • Handspring Visor
  • ..and TRG Pro

We do not however support wireless gathering of the content via the Palm VII interface or PQA scripts.
